Bootup Strutta Christmas Video

The folks from all of the companies at Bootup Labs and the rockstars of Strutta get together for another great holiday video. Includes “Last Christmas” by Wham.

Jordan did a great job of pulling together the holiday lip dub again this year.

Danny Robinson Wins Best Industry Advocate Award

*cross-posted from the Strutta blog.

The winners have been announced, and Bootup Labs Managing Director Danny Robinson  has been selected as one of the recipients of the PopVox Awards.

Strutta hosted the voting platform for the popular choice categories, and the Georgia Straight has already published the list of all of the winners. Four additional awards, chosen by a jury, were given out to Individual Standouts, and Danny was recognized as the top Industry Advocate. Here’s Danny with a few words following the acceptance of the award:

Want to snatch up some tickets to Launch Party Vancouver 7? There are still a few available.

The whole gang here at Bootup Labs HQ is very proud of Danny and this well-deserved bit of recognition. Morale is at a frenzied peak here at HQ, with lots of new faces and plenty of exciting announcements coming soon from the member companies. Stay tuned!

Launch Party Vancouver 6 Companies Announced

The judges have chosen, and six well-qualified Vancouver startups are set to demo their wares for you at Launch Party Vancouver 6.

Like with Launch Party 5, we’ll feature each of the companies in a 2 min video and give you the chance to vote on which is most likely to succeed. Voting will begin starting Monday, Feb 16.

Here’s a sneak-peak at the six companies chosen to demo their products at Launch Party Vancouver 6:

3rdWhale – In their own words: “We just launched 3rdWhale Mobile, an LBS-enabled iPhone application that lets individuals find sustainable businesses around them, everything from restaurants and grocery stores to yoga studios and ecou-tourism stores. With over 15,000+ green businesses in our DB, we’re live in Vancouver, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, San Jose and are quickly adding more cities. Though the app is essentially in beta (”Lite” is Apple speak for beta), we aim to quickly add new functionality, including advanced social networking features, user feedback and Facebook Connect integration.”

HandiMobility – In their own words: “We’re launching a new tool called MobifyMe to let webmasters extend their current websites to mobile without developing separate mobile sites.”

Rilli – Rilli is a map-based online and mobile event creation tool for social people, doing real things, in the real world.

HearWhere – Find Live Music Anywhere – a worldwide discovery site for live music. Over 1 million show listings and growing, hearwhere plays samples from the artists, connects to blog reviews, tickets and music downloads and more.

TimeWindow – In their own words: TimeCam.TV is a service that creates an online time lapse from any Internet camera or webcam. It is the easiest way to create a time lapse online. You don’t need any additional hardware and there is no software to install. Just sign-up on TimeCam.TV and place a small piece of HTML on your website. That’s it.

Showbert – Showbert.com is where TV viewers come to review, rate, schedule, share, explore, and even watch their favorite TV shows. Using some Web 3.0 techniques we offer a unique, exciting and (most importantly) a useful site for tv enthusiasts.

You’ll be able to learn more about these compnaies and vote for your favorites soon, when the Strutta-powered contest site launches at LPV6.LaunchPartyHQ.com.

See you at the event!

Happy Holidays – Christmas is all around lip dub

Our office got together this week and did a fun holiday lip dub video:

Thanks to Jordan for whipping us all into shape — check out the Strutta holiday page for the main post of this video.

If you haven’t seen it, First Round Capital did an excellent holiday video with all their portfolio companies.

Win Free Pizza for a Year! from Boston Pizza

Strutta launched the first real customer on it’s new platform yesterday.  I’m saying “real” because we did run the Launch Party contest on it last week, but it was sort of an inside job since we also organize Launch Party.

Check it out, enter to win Free Pizza for a year, and let us know what you think.  Oh, and especially let Maura know if you want us to make something like this for you.

Don’t miss VIDFEST May 21st-May 24th

Quick post to remind everyone to check out Vidfest and The Vancouver International Game Summit.   Looks like it’s going to be a great event this year.  I’ll be there on Saturday to pitch Strutta at the Pitch ‘n’ Play part of the event.

A note to the organizers: We accidentally scheduled Launch Party on the same night as the Opening Reception.  I apologized to Adam, and explained that the reason we chose May 21st to host Launch Party was because of the VCs that would be in town for the VC Road Trip. Maura, Dimitri and I promised to pay more attention in the future….. Hey maybe we should have a unified calendar… err techvibes does I guess, but VIDFEST is not on there.  Besides, I told Boris Wertz that I wont use it until they break up with their 1999 web design?  That said, their blog is a great resource for the city and should be read daily if you want to know anything about the tech scene in Vancouver.

Embarassing Story About Strutta’s Pu’bic Launch

Dick Hardt asked me to speak at last night’s Vancouver Enterprise Forum on a new segment they just started called Lightning Talks. They’re trying out a new format where the presentations and speakers go first, and then you move on to the networking with dinner and drinks afterwards. Despite the size of the instant line for food that suddenly appears, I prefer the new format. Maybe that’s because Heather (from Growthworks) let me cut in with her.

Anyway, this is how the Lightning Talks part works: Up to 4 entrepreneurs have 100 seconds to pitch their idea. After the 100 seconds are up, Dick flicks a switch and your screen is off and the next presentation starts. So, It was Jonathan Bixby of Strangeloop Networks and Nikki Layton of Volo Innovations and I was pitching Strutta.

My second slide in my presentations was announcing that we just launched our public beta launch on April 15th. Problem was that “Public” was spelled “Pubic” Needless to say, the place erupted in laughter. It took me a few seconds to figure out what was happening and by the time I was able to get started again, my 100 seconds was pretty much over. The moral of this story, Proof your slides!

Adding salt to my wounds, both Nikki and Jonathan effortlessly nailed their presentations.

Contact Dick info [at] vef.org if you want to pitch your company at the next VEF. I’d love to have a redo, but I don’t think I’d be accepted.
